A patient lies still as a dozen hair-thin needles are inserted into their skin. There is no pain — only a sensation of heaviness or warmth. This is acupuncture, a medical practice over 2,000 years old, based on a map of energy pathways called meridians that cross the human body like rivers across a landscape.

The Meridian System

Acupuncture is based on the theory of qi flowing through 12 primary meridians, each connected to a major organ system. These meridians form a complete circuit, and illness results from blockages or imbalances in this flow. By inserting needles at specific points (acupoints), the acupuncturist restores the proper flow of qi.

From Stone Needles to Modern Science

The earliest acupuncture needles were made of stone and bone. By the Han Dynasty, metal needles — gold for stimulation, silver for sedation — were standard. Today, MRI studies have shown that acupuncture activates specific brain regions, releases endorphins, and modulates the nervous system, providing a scientific basis for its efficacy.

Global Integration

The WHO recognizes acupuncture as effective treatment for dozens of conditions, including chronic pain, nausea, and anxiety. Over 10,000 acupuncturists practice in the United States alone. Acupuncture is one of TCM's most successful exports — a 2,000-year-old therapy that 21st-century science is still catching up with.
