Wang Yuanqi bears Nanyin, the ancient chamber music of Minnan-speaking south Fujian, preserved in Quanzhou's musical clubs since at least the Song dynasty. Nanyin ensembles pair plucked lutes modeled on Tang-dynasty instruments with horizontal flute and bowed erxian, accompanying singer-led suites sung in an archaic dialect.
Clubs called nanguanshe maintained transmission through amateur gatherings where etiquette governed seating and repertoire order.
