Guizhou is ninety-two percent mountains and hills, a karst labyrinth that kept dozens of ethnic communities culturally intact for centuries. The saying "no three li of flat land" explains both its poverty in imperial times and the survival of Miao silverwork, Dong towers, and Shui script into the present.
Its soundscapes are globally recognised. The Dong sing polyphonic Grand Songs without conductor or score, inscribed by UNESCO in 2009, while Miao festivals fill terraced villages such as Xijiang with fourteen hundred households of embroidered festival dress. Fanjingshan joined the World Heritage List in 2018 for biodiversity found nowhere else.
