Zhang Jun, often nicknamed the Prince of Kunqu, graduated from the Shanghai Theatre Academy's Kunqu program in the 1980s and rose to leading-man status performing scholar-lover roles such as Liu Mengmei in The Peony Pavilion. His career coincided with Kunqu's recovery from near extinction, after UNESCO listed it among the first Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001.
Beyond the state troupe system, Zhang founded a private studio to experiment with garden performances and university touring. His youth-oriented production strategy brought tens of thousands of students to Kunqu for the first time, rebuilding an audience base that had aged past renewal.
